These are highly polished slices of their hexagonal crystal formation. These beautiful gems have been mined for more than 2500 years. Everyone knows about Colombian emeralds, but I'll bet you didn't know that Swat emeralds were found among the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement in present day France. Many of these emeralds found in the treasured antiquities of India are believed to have been from the Swat Valley. Altho these emeralds have been known to ancient Romans, they were forgotten by the outside world until the mine was rediscovered in 1958.
